About E-Flora BC

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Bitter Root (Lewisia rediviva), photo by Dave Ingram

E-Flora BC is a collaborative, volunteer-driven project supported by many agencies and individuals. This strong support and recognition of a vision for compiling and presenting scientifically accurate information on the BC flora in a single location has made E-Flora possible. We owe thanks to many people for this support.

We would like to particularly express our thanks and appreciation to the following individuals and agencies:

  • A special mention to Andy MacKinnon who kick-started the project by providing text and illustrations from the Illustrated Flora of British Columbia to E-Flora to bring online
  • to George Douglas who strongly encouraged project development
  • to Fred Ganders, who supported the project form the beginning, providing a key partnership and key data to begin our mapping component
  • to UBC geography grad student Laura Cotton, who began the whole thing in 2002 with investigations into the availability of online GIS mapping capabilities and plant atlases--a new capability at the time
  • Adolf Ceska, who wished for a BC plant atlas long before it became a reality and has provided continued strong support
  • to Ian Gibson who has developed the fungi section on E-Flora BC with over 1000 atlas pages now available
  • to our photo review team who work constantly at checking photos and distribution information (Jamie Fenneman, Frank Lomer, Curtis Bjork, Adolf Ceska, Terry Taylor, Michael Beug, Jim Ginns and Steve Joya)
  • to the late Wilf Schofield was developed the first sixteen atlas pages for liverworts, complete with detailed mapping
  • to Anna Colangeli and Dianne Humphrey who prepared and tested a draft interctive plant key for vascular plants
  • to Jim Riley who provided the first substantial photo set for our gallery when we thought this might be an impossible task
  • to our advisory team--Kent Brothers, Adolf Ceska, Anna Colangeli, Ray Coupe, Matt Fairbarns, Fred Ganders, Perry Grilz, Gary Lewis, Jenifer Penny, Marta Donovan, Jeanette Whitton-- who provide on-going discussion on project issues and components, along with good suggestions
  • to Michael Hawkes and Sandra Lindstrom for guiding our algae section
  • to Janet Taylor who is working on a freshwater algae component
  • to Alan McConchie and Walter Sinclair who are providing programming support as well as developing an E-Flora smart phone app
  • and to our more than 400 photographers who contribute to the photo gallery.

OUR PHOTOGRAPHERS!

There are so many photographers contributing photos to E-Flora BC that it has become impossible to list them all here. CURRENT PROGRAMMERS AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Computer Programmers: Walter Sinclair and Alan McConchie
GIS Specialist: Claire Wooton

PAST PROGRAMMERS and TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Our thanks go to Devon Cathers, Bill Liang, Chen Liu, John Sture, and Stanley Tian for magical general programming, and to Wayne Kwok, Luan Vo, and Rachel Wiersma for GIS and mapping programming. Without these programmers, E-Flora BC would not exist. Thanks, too, to Vincent Kujula for network support, and, often, rescue.
