Course Objective:

  • To introduce the principle processes and concepts of meteorology and climatology at the synoptic and global scales.
  • To gain an appreciation of the wonders of the atmosphere
  • To be able to understand and perhaps even make your own weather forecasts

The main topics of the course are:

  • Solar radiation
  • Longwave (IR) and net allwave radiation
  • Heat balance and temperature
  • Water balance and atmospheric moisture
  • Atmospheric thermodynamics
  • Precipitation
  • Atmospheric motion
  • Wind systems
  • Air masses, fronts and frontogenesis
  • Global climate and climate change
