Welcome to the home page for Geob 370 -- Advanced Issues in GIScience. This course builds upon the Introduction to GIScience course (GEOB 270) offered in the Geography Department. In it I focus on advanced GIScience topics such as the nature of geographic data, uncertainty in geographic data, database management systems, and advanced spatial analysis.  Overall, the course is aimed at furthering your understanding of how geographic information can be used to solve problems and gain insights.

After taking this course you will be able to conduct advanced spatial analyses using both raster and vector data, know what makes spatial data 'special' (e.g., scale, projections), identify appropriate sources for spatial data (e.g., GPS, remote sensing), and learn how to collaborate with others as you work towards a common goal (i.e., the project).

Using the menu above you can access the course description (the 'syllabus'), as well as the schedule of lectures and labs (with links to the lecture materials and the labs). A description of the project, as well as examples of projects completed by students who took the course in previous years, is also available.

Should you wish to learn more about the software used in the labs (ArcMap 10), ESRI has a text that you can use to learn ArcMap; the text includes a CD with the software: Getting to know ArcGIS Desktop. The library has a GIS lab that you can access: the GIS/Data Research Lab in the Koerner Library; as well, they offer access to many different spatial and non-spatial databases (Data Services).
