Bridgegate Resort Village was approved in 2005 to be developed on Crowsnest Lake in Southwestern Alberta. The grand vision for the project is for it to become a world class resort destination with condominiums and amenities to rival Banff and Whistler. So far the project has received wide support from the local government and residents, and even environmentalists who foresee limited environmental damage outside what has already been caused by a former power plant in the area.

Upon discovering that the project developer, Bridgecreek Developments, was in need of preliminary analyses to determine the recreational capability of the surrounding environment and potentially ecologically sensitive areas, our team  volunteered our project efforts. The scope of our project has been to evaluate the following:
  • terrain suitable for alpine and cross country skiing
  • land use
  • forest composition and productivity
  • ungulate and waterfowl habitat
  • recreation capability classifications

The results of our albeit preliminary research is that there is significant potential for recreation on the land surrounding the development, including a site that may be suitable for downhill skiing.  Environmental impacts, such as incursion into ungulate habitat must be considered but is not prohibitive to development.
