ADFAR Project
Avalanche Decision Framework for Amateur Recreationists
The purpose of this project is to construct a science-based decision framework tool that will help you to manage your risk while traveling in avalanche terrain in Canada. Backcountry skiers, out-of-bounds skiers and snowmobiler riders will benefit from this new development, in hopes to increase awareness and help decrease fatalities while winter recreating. This card will assist and act as an aid to help interpret the daily avalanche bulletins and to help recognize avalanche conditions from past experiences. There are similar projects already in Europe, but in order for regional development, we must find alternative solutions for Canadian only mountains. The ADFAR project focuses on Canadas terrain and snow patterns.
Similar Projects in Europe:
-Reduction Method
-Snowcard
One full year of data collection has been conducted at Glacier National
Park, Kicking Horse Ski Resort and . The framework tool is proposed to
be completed in 3 years, and currently the Canadian Avalanche
Association is working on designing this backcountry skiing
decision-support tool. This tool is being constructed to by-pass
all of the human biases involved while backcountry
recreating. This tool will assist winter recreationists of
all levels, developed to suit anyone along their learning curve.
This framework tool will not be considered as a
substitude for education and experience, more act as an aid to help
assist decisions in the backcountry.
