This project attempts to utilize GIS software to map
snow avalanche related fatalities within the western side of North
America. Data was mapped from 1955 to 2004 for Canada and 1983 to
2004 for the U.S. Data was mapped according to activity and
different maps were created to be studied. These maps include:
Alaska and British Columbia snowmobile deaths, British Columbia slope
map indicating slope steepness where fatalities occurred, ski area
buffer map, and map showing all avalanche related fatalities along the
western side of North America. The mountains in North America
attract all kinds of user groups. Because of the increasing
number of avalanche fatalities over the years, our groups principle
purpose is to try to pinpoint what areas in North American are of most
concern and why the numbers of fatalities are increasing significantly
in these locations.
As four outdoor enthusiasts, we are aiming our
project to help increase awareness in avalanche safety among all winter
recreationists in not only these key locations but everywhere as
well. We are searching for relationships and trends with the
specific avalanche and hazard standards currently implemented in these
places. Team Depth Hoar hopes that this project will educate
those vulnerable to snow avalanches the need for avalanche awareness.
