Hi, my name’s Eric Spilker and I am a fourth year geography major at UBC.  Besides mapping, I enjoy snowboarding, surfing, kayaking, dogs, and getting out of the city. After a minor injury heals, I will soon be back in the mountains doing what I love most (besides mapping, of course), playing in the snow. Growing up in the Kootenays has given me a passion for the snow, mountains and the related outdoor activities. This, combined with my love for geography, has made this project a perfect topic for me to study.  Being an active, knowledgeable participant in outdoor winter activities, I am aware of the potential threat, as well as the lack of a comprehensive understanding of avalanche dangers.  My goal for this project is to bring added awareness to the field that is only available through a GIS analysis

I am finishing up my 4th year at UBC, and will graduate with a B.Sc in May 2006. I love to ski, surf, climb, bike, and everything in between..including painting. As a backcountry skier, avalanche awareness and training is very important to me, thus I continue to further my education about the natural hazards around us. My scholastic focii has been on fluvial geomorphology and natural hazards (floods to avalanches). Most of my experience has been in the mountains around Chilliwack, and more recently out on the Coast Mountains. When not climbing or skiing, I like to hangout at the beach in Roberts Creek or go surf off the coast of Vancouver Island. I see the importance of this project and website as is can help improve avalanche awareness, and the resources that exist on the web for the backcountry enthusiast.

(Christian Ratcliffe goes big..... really big.  Everywhere you go you can hear people tell the stories about "I remember when Ratcliffe hucked that, crazy man).....those are the rumors around town. Since the crazy times I have taken a more controled approach.  After 5 years of dedicated study, I have just completed my B.Sc. in Physical Geography at UBC. I have since returned to Whistler BC in pursuit of bottomless powder and epic bluebird days.

I am finishing my undergrad degree in December 2005, leaving UBC with a bachelor of science in physical geography.  My interests include: hiking, soccer, snowboarding, and rockclimbing. While at UBC, I have worked as a research assistant for Dr. Dave McClung in the avalanche research group. I hope to someday run my own bed and breakfast or cabin in the mountains.  Being from Brantford, Ontario, I consider Ontario my home, but BC is my future.  The mountains are my destiny.
