| According to NBCSandiego.com,
the city of San Diego has decreased its overall crime rate, while also
being
statistically known as "one of safest big cities in the
United States" as stated in the San Diego
Police Department 2002 report. The areas of focus were the census tracts surrounding the Northern and Southern parts of San Diego Bay. The inset map to the right displays the area of focus within California and the large map is the area we will be addressing throughout the project. Our goal was to investigate the correlation between residential burglaries and census tracts. Thus, we have chosen to analyze the relationship between the census tracts of focus and the number of residential burglaries in relation to factors such as census tract population, median household income, whether the homes are rented or owned by the resident(s), and whether the properties are one unit, or two or more unit homes. We hypothesized that an increasing number of burglaries would correspond with the increasing number of rented homes, and a similar trend for multiple unit homes, such as apartments and condos. We also expected that a census tract with a large population would have a higher incidence of burglaries than a census tract with fewer people- that is, the number of burglaries would be proportional to the population. We predicted that higher income homes would be at greater risk for burglaries as they may have more disposable income and thus more valuables. |
