Social Housing Characteristics in Surrey and Vancouver with Relation to
Existing Establishments and Social Services

The focus of our
project will be to find a suitable location for a new social housing
complex in Surrey. The new site will be evaluated based on the
socioeconomic characteristics of the residents, family structure,
relation to existing social housing and services and accessibility to
transit. We selected Surrey as the region of interest because of the
growing problem with homelessness and the need for social support
especially in Whalley, Surrey’s equivalent of the Downtown Eastside.
Strong emphasis was placed on examining statistics from the 2001
Canadian Census; this helped to provide us with a clear representation
of the background of the individuals and families living in the
neighborhoods of Surrey. Surrey is a city that is considered a suburb
of Greater Vancouver and usually neglected in the planning and
expenditure of social services. Through conducting our studies and
producing a variety of maps, we hope to show the need of this region
for social support and our proposal for a suitable site for a new
social housing complex will hopefully be able to help many families in
need of assistance.
