Methods and Data

Study Area:

First a target area was delineated from a map of British Columbia.   This area includes southern BC as far as  Prince George. The coastal region was clipped farther south due to known access issues.

 Road Network:

Then a system of roads was superimposed on to the study area. The roads were reclassified according to rank.
  1. Trunk (major highways)
  2. Main (minor highways)
  3. Local
Areas not included in the road network were assumed to have smaller roads such as small unpaved roads and logging roads.

Towns and Cities:

A shape file of towns and cities was clipped to the target area. First  the larger cities (those with PPNCODE 101, 100 & 1) were seperated into their own layer. Then the smaller cities, towns and communities were displayed according to size:

     1.  Town
     2.  Village
     3. Community.

The data was sourced from census Canada 2006.
