Saving the Seattle SuperSonics: Abstract
The Seattle
SuperSonics require a new stadium or they will be moved to Oklahoma
City. In hopes of
saving the Supersonics, the Dream
Team has collaborated to create a proposal outlining potential sites
for
stadium construction in Seattle. We performed a multi-criteria evaluation
within ArcGIS in order to give preference to particular areas and to
avoid undesirable
areas in hopes of finding potential areas for stadium construction in
Seattle. The multi-criteria evaluation
involved two
broad factors: areas to avoid and preferred areas.
Within the areas to avoid criteria were:
proximity to slide, erosion, and seismic hazards, and the elimination
of
parklands and protected wetlands. Within
the preferred area criteria were: proximity to transportation networks,
areas of
high population density and particular land uses such as industrial and
agricultural. The criteria within each
category were given subjective weights determined by the Dream Team. The two factors were combined to create a
final map showing potential sites. Through
careful analysis of the final map, the Dream Team narrowed the number
of
potential sites to three. Finally, they
chose what they considered to be the most suitable site out of the
three. The Dream Team hopes that this
proposal will
help save the SuperSonics from being moved to Oklahoma.
