This project initially sought to determine the solar potential of a block of buildings in downtown Vancouver’s West End. Limitations in data collections led us to a new but similar analysis. Our intentions were an investigation of a three dimensional volumetric shadow cast by the potential construction of a  rental housing high-rise located on Comox and Broughton Street in Vancouver’s West End. We seek to determine in our small scale three dimensional model the associated costs of construction in this area where development is already highly contested. Our goals were a detailed shadow analysis originally using Arc Scene and later shifting to Google Sketch Up, as well as to represent the virtual reality of this high rise building projected in the third dimension. Our findings, which were not fully conclusive in Arc Scene, give a detailed understanding of local area elements, such as the relative scale, distance, and orientation. Upon further analysis we evaluated the solar radiation from a DEM represented in second dimension as a means of concluding our original objectives and to depict the potential of third dimension GIS analysis.
