Abstract

Translink, The City of Vancouver, the University of British Columbia (UBC), the Government of British Columbia, and the University Endowment Lands are in the process of studying the potential placement of a rapid transit line that would connect UBC to the existing rapid transit line in Vancouver, the Skytrain. There is a study area within Vancouver that lies between 16th Ave and 4th Ave and encompasses multiple Skytrain Stations. Although Translink has multiple alternatives to only a Skytrain but in this project, we will only approach the extension of a Skytrain line across the city. This project will look at multiple Skytrain stations, Broadway, Main Street, and Nanaimo, as start points and look at the shortest paths and the cheapest paths across the city as well as count how many community assets (community centers and libraries) that each route falls close to. These maps then are compared to each other to see what route is the best all around route in terms of cost and community use. The Broadway shortest path follows Translink’s proposed very closely but fails to interact with as many community assets and is more expensive than the shortest path from Broadway which, according to this projects criteria, is a better route that would provide a wider range of use from a wider demographic as well as providing accessibility to community assets and commercial areas alike.
