Abstract

Landslides are an inherent risk in areas of high slope and are amplified by high precipitation, low soil stability, weak vegetation, and human development. Due to the mountanous landscape of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, landslides are not uncommon. This project used GIS technology to assess the areas of Vancouver Island that are most at risk for landslides. Precipitation, slope, soil type, vegetation type, transportation and population data were combined in a multi-criteria analysis that evaluated the areas most at risk based on the relative importance of each factor.
