GEOB 372 Introduction to Cartography
         

Course Outline, Winter 2012

 
This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of cartography. Students will learn about cartographic communication, map types, and the process of map design. Students are expected to attend and participate in all lectures, complete lab exercises and a final project, read selections from the course text, and write a midterm and final exam.

Lab Fee A department lab fee of $30 is charged to cover photocopying ($5) and computer lab supplies and computer use ($25). You will be given a username and password upon payment of the lab fee. Associated with your account will be a printing account, which you can put money into at the main office during regular office hours.

You must complete all lab assignments to pass the course. A penalty of one mark per school day will be deducted for late labs for up to one week. After one week, a late lab will receive a 50% deduction, although it must still be completed. If you will be unable to complete a lab in time, you must contact your TA before the lab is due. Labs are due either at the beginning of your lab time or by 4:30pm that day at the main office. No labs will be accepted by email.

The final project is due Friday, April 6, at 12pm, in the main office. Project requirements will be distributed separately. Late projects will be penalized one mark per school day.
   
Attendance If you encounter medical or personal circumstances that affect your ability to attend classes and/or hand in assignments, please notify the instructor as early as possible.
   
Academic Dishonesty Copying from sources such as Wikipedia or from other students’ work will not be tolerated. Please always log off department computers so no one can access files you have stored on the network.
