Introduction
Mega
events can create quick changes to a city’s landscape.
They can have many direct and indirect consequences.
This study examines Atlanta and Fulton County, Georgia and the changes that occurred due to the 1996 Olympic
Games. Specifically, this study examines
the changes to land cover, property values and social attributes. A
social index was created based on education levels that include masters
or higher and professional degrees for people of the age twenty five
and older, and household income equal to $50 000 and higher.
GIS will be used to analyze the change in land cover, property
values and changes
to the
social index.
Research Questions
We want to look at specifically:
- 1 Did the Olympic venues show any
relation to significant neighborhood transformations between the 1980’s
and 2003?
- 2 Were Olympic venues located in
areas that were already undergoing transformation prior to the 1990s?
- 3 Or do the locations of Olympic
venues seem to have 'neighborhood effects' large enough to change
important aspects of the social and economic fabric of inner city
neighborhoods in the 1990s?
