Land
Use Maps for the 1980s and 2003
Land use maps for the city of Atlanta was created for both the 1980's data set and the 2003's data set. This is for Fulton County only. The data sets from these rasterized land use maps were used in the calculation of the expected change in land use for the chi squared test.
Land use for the city of Atlanta
This map shows the 1 km areas buffered around the venues. Even though the areas are offset, the maps do show an increase in built up areas around the venues from before the Olympics to after the Olympics. You can also see the difference in the areas that were buffered due to the changes in mapping for the 2003 data set.

Chi
Squared Test
The chi squared test showed significant results
for each different
distance buffer. The following graphs show the expected land use
change and observed land use change. The expected land use change
was calculated based on land use changes in the city of Atlanta and
1980's data set.
In the 1 km buffered area around the venues, we
can see that commercial and services land use category has increased
significantly in 2003 than the expected value. The residential
land use category has decreased significantly in 2003 compared to the
expected value and the values seen in the 1980s. Industrial and
commercial land use has gone down significantly as well compared to the
1980's land use and the expected change value.
1 km buffered area around venues
In the 3 km buffered
area around the venues, we can see that the land use category for
commercial and services is below expected changes in 2003. The
residential category on the other hand, is quite close to the 1980's
values and the expected change value, although it is still less than
either of those values for 2003. Industrial and commercial land
use for 2003 does decrease from the expected value but the decrease is
not as significant compared to the 1 km buffered area. The land
use category for Forest increased in 2003, but this could be due to the
addition of parks and golf courses values added to the Forest category
when we were creating a comparable land use legend.
3 km
buffered area around venues
The 5 km
buffers show simiilar results to the 3 km buffer zones. There is
an increase in commercial and servies but generally, the 2003 observed
values are lower than the expected values.
5 km
buffered area around venues
The chi squared table
showing expected,
observed and chi squared results indicate that the Olympic venues
affected the land use in the area around the venues
significantly. A chi squared was calculated for each of the
buffered zones. The chi squared values can be found in the Total
column in the table below. The table also shows 1980's land use
values, expected land use values and observed land use values.
