Abstract and Context
This project is a study on
Vancouver's Panhandlers and the profits
that they earn. In order to
properly examine this issue, I have made
a point of moving throughout
various areas in Kitsilano, East Broadway
and Downtown Vancouver. I
have interviewed over 30 different panhandlers,
noted their locations,
and asked them questions regarding their levels of
productivity. Based on the questions, I hoped to arrive at answers to
the
following questions:
- How
much do panhandlers make?
- Where is the best place to panhandle?
- What are the factors that impact the
above questions?
Using this information, I have been
able to create a series of layouts
and
tables to examine which areas of Vancouver seem most suitable for
successful panhandling. There were many factors involved, but using
data
from the 2001 Census, I was able to overlay the information I
gathered with
average income, and Landuse. These additions have put the
analysis into
perspective and allow for a better understanding of the
information.
Having worked on this project, and having spent over twenty hours
talking
with homeless and panhandlers, I feel that I have learned a
lot, and hope
that you will find this material as interesting as I did.
Cheers!
