| Course Description (from calendar): Students learn how GIS is used in research applications in conservation biology, crime analysis, and health geography; theoretical and practical aspects are considered in a hands-on environment. |
| Prerequisites and/or Course Restrictions (from calendar): GEOB 370 or equivalent. Preference given to Human Geography or Geographical Biogeoscience majors with at least 75 credits completed. |
| Format of the course: The course will be composed of two hours of lectures / seminars followed by two hours of supervised lab work per week. |
| Required and Recommended Reading: A list of useful reference books can be found here. There is no official course text since no text covers the diverse range of topics presented in this course. |
| Course Grading: The assignments and labs will be marked (worth 50% of the final mark), there will be a major project required at the end of the term (worth 50%). The final determination of marks is subject to the policy stated in the official UBC guidelines for the determination of marks. |
| Course Policies: The calendar says: Regular attendance is expected of students in all their classes (including lectures, laboratories, tutorials, seminars, etc.). Students who neglect their academic work and assignments may be excluded from the final examinations. Students who are unavoidably absent because of illness or disability should report to their instructors on return to classes. |

| Late assignments: There will be a 10% per day reduction in late assignments, unless indication is given before the lab due date that the lab will be turned in late. |
| Participation: All labs and assignments must be completed, and the final project must also be completed, in order to receive a passing grade in the course.. |
