Equity and Diversity CommitteeThe Department of Geography is committed to providing a learning and working environment that encourages collegiality, support and respect—an environment where students, faculty, and staff promote the goal of equity. Department Equity StatementEquity guarantees all people the freedom to realize and fulfil their potential free from restrictions such as employment and education inequities, lack of accommodation or adequate institutional structures, and policies and practices that perpetuate systemic discrimination. Every student, faculty, and staff member has the right to study and work in an environment that is free from discrimination and harassment as a result of age, race, color, ancestry, place of origin, political belief, religion, marital and family status, physical or mental disability, gender, sexual orientation, and unrelated criminal convictions. The Department has established its own Equity Committee to help support the maintenance of an equitable environment. The Equity Committee is able to refer concerns about a variety of issues, including those involving student rights. It is also able to advise other departmental committees on equity issues, and supports the Positive Space Campaign at UBC. You may contact committee members, the Department Head, or the UBC Equity Office to request more information or to raise concerns.
