Geography Seminars

Geography Seminars are an informal requirement by the department that encourages graduate students to present their topic of research to peers, faculty and staff. These seminars are also a good venue for visiting scholars to present their research. The seminars are roughly classified into human and physical geography topics. The schedule of presentations is arranged as the semester evolves.

Physical Geography Topics for 2010 - 2011

April 5th, 2011 - Kim Bryson and Marc Edwards
"Living and working in the High Arctic - a slideshow" and "Initial results from Kim and Marc's thesis work"

Anne Bjorkman's place @ 7pm

Abstract: While our planet has warmed by roughly 0.75°C over the past century, this warming has not been spatially uniform. Temperatures in the Arctic have risen to a higher degree and at a faster rate than the global average. Current research suggests that additional warming in the Arctic over the next century is likely to be in the range of 4°C to 7°C. As a result, ecosystem form and function will be impacted. Our research employs the experimental manipulation of certain environmental variables (temperature, nutrient supply), which allows us to explore how tundra vegetation in the Canadian High Arctic is likely to respond to climate change.

March 24, 2011 - Natasha Cowie
"Effects of Glacier Retreat on Proglacial Streams and Riparian Zones"

Geography Dept., Room 215 - 4pm

Abstract: As glaciers retreat, new headwaters are exposed and existing proglacial streams are subjected to changes in streamflow and sediment supply and calibre. Development of riparian forest further contributes to the evolution of channel morphology and aquatic habitat characteristics. My study examines the trajectories of proglacial channel development in coastal British Columbia and Washington.
