Thomas is a Professor in the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management and in the Departments of Earth Science and Geography at the University of California Santa Barbara. He obtained a B.A. in Geography from Cambridge University in 1964 and a PhD in Geography from The Johns Hopkins University in 1969. He conducts field and theoretical studies in hillslope and fluvial geomorphology, and in the application of hydrology and geomorphology to landscape management and hazard analysis. His current personal research involves the theory of hillslope evolution by water erosion and the effects of sediment supply on lowland river channels and floodplains in the Amazon Basin and along the Merced and San Joaquin Rivers of California.
