A Review of Spatial Data Sources Within the U. S. Government
Directions Magazine takes a special look at the new portal developed by the United States Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in conjunction with the U. S. Geological Survey, called The GeoSpatial One-Stop (GOS). We'll look at the variety of data that is offered and provide links to areas of this portal of particular interest to readers, especially to cut through some of the "red tape" to dig into the best areas to download data. Other portals are available from the GOS site; we have selected some of the more salient resources. Is it a "one-stop shop?" You be the judge. We hope you find this a valuable resource.
Accuracy of the National Elevation Dataset
A plan for assessing the overall accuracy of the National Elevation Dataset (NED) based on independent high-accuracy geodetic control is currently under development. The accuracy described will be in the terms used in the FGDC Content Standards for Framework Land Elevation Data. Accuracy will be determined and reported using the methodology specified in the FGDC National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy.
Agent Analyst (Agent-based modeling extension)
The goals of this website are to (1) act as a central portal for information and support for the Agent Analyst toolkit developed by Argonne National Laboratory’s Center for Complex Adaptive Agent Systems Simulation (http://www.cas.anl.gov) in collaboration with ESRI, (2) to promote cooperation and collaboration among the user community, and (3) to advance the toolkit as a technology. Agent Analyst is an agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) extension for the ESRI's ArcGIS suite of products. Agent Analyst integrates and extends the functionalities of the open-source Repast modeling and simulation environment with the power and flexibility of ArcGIS and ArcObjects. Agent Analyst fully integrates ABMS with GIS. Through this integration, GIS experts gain the ability to model behaviors and processes as change and movement over time (e.g., simulate land use and land cover changes, predator-prey interactions, or network flows and congestion) while ABMS modelers are able to incorporate detailed real-world environmental data, perform complex spatial processes, and study how behavior is constrained by space and geography. Furthermore, ABMS models can be include real-time GIS data feeds for situations such as disaster management, firefighting, or resource management. Agent Analyst allows users to create, edit, and run Repast models from within the ArcGIS 9 geoprocessing framework, including access through ArcToolbox, ModelBuilder, and ArcMap. The graphical Agent Analyst tools allow the user to create agents, schedule simulations, establish mappings to ArcGIS layers, and specify the behavior and interactions of the agents.
ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection)
ASTER is an imaging instrument that is flying on Terra, a satellite launched in December 1999 as part of NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS). ASTER is a cooperative effort between NASA and Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Earth Remote Sensing Data Analysis Center (ERSDAC). ASTER will be used to obtain detailed maps of land surface temperature, emissivity, reflectance and elevation. The EOS platforms are part of NASA's Earth Science Enterprise, whose goal is to obtain a better understanding of the interactions between the biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and atmosphere.

BC Land and Resource Data Warehouse (LRDW)
The BC Land and Resource Data Warehouse (LRDW) is the corporate repository for integrated land, resource and geographic data that supports a variety of business requirements for the natural resource sector, other government agencies, industry and the public. The following services are available to find out what data is in the warehouse, download it or view it through your browser. Each service has online help to assist users. Some services have tutorials which show a user how to utilize the service. Discover Data: The Discovery Service allows users to determine what data is available in the warehouse. Click here to access this service. Download Data: The Distribution Service allows users to order information for download from the warehouse to their own computers. Click here to access this service. View Data: The Access Service allows users to view warehouse data directly through a web browser using mapping software. Click here to access this service.
BC TRIM Home Page
The TRIM program produces digital maps, which is a collection of coverages to conform with the BC Geographic System layout. TRIM mapping consists of 7,027 mapsheets covering the province of British Columbia at a scale of 1:20 000. The cartographic framework for this mapping is the Univeral Transverse Mercator coordinate system, based on NAD83 (1983 North American Datum). Each mapsheet is precisely 12 minutes of longitude wide by 6 minutes of latitude high.

California Geographic Information Systems (GIS) web portal
The California Mapping Coordinating Committee (CMCC) is in the process of developing a series of GIS-related web pages to provide information on State government GIS activities, access to statewide GIS data, and links to the larger California GIS community. Starting July 1, 2001 some of California's physical and cultural geospatial information, formerly distributed by the Teale Data Center, is being distributed to the public by the California Mapping Coordinating Committee through servers at the California Environmental Resources Evaluation System (CERES) in the Resources Agency and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Center.
Canada Landsat Mosaic Image EOSD
Earth Observation for Sustainable Development of Forests, EOSD: Canada Landsat Mosaic Image: Jpeg images (easiest to download); Tif & ECW images (zip files); Full resolution image (compressed to 3.2 GB). The Canada Landsat mosaic image was generated from a series of compressed tiles generated by Earthsat Corporation (circa 1990). The area of the tiles used to generate the mosaic was equivalent to 5 degrees Latitude and 6 degrees Longitude. The generation of the MrSID tiles was initiated by a scientific data purchase program funded by NASA's Earth Science Enterprise Program. Individual tiles are available at http://www.esad.ssc.nasa.gov/.

Census Geography Illustrated Glossary (Canadian)
Geography is important to the national statistical system. Well-defined geographic areas provide the framework for the collection, presentation and analysis of data. To take full advantage of Census data, users need to have a basic understanding of the terms related to geography concepts, infrastructure, products and services. To explore geographical definitions and concepts, use the alphabetical listing or a hierarchy chart.

DATUMS, PROJECTIONS and COORDINATE SYSTEMS
This book provides a fundamental introduction to how the earth is modeled, what a datum is, how the three-dimensional earth can be represented on a flat plane, and how coordinate systems are used. This book has been prepared as background material for a workshop on Datums Projections and Coordinate Systems. After reading this book or participating in this workshop you will have a knowledge of how datums, projections and coordinate systems are used for both paper and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, as well as an understanding of datum transformation issues. For a copy of the complete document "Datums, Projections and Coordinate Systems" please email: Mark.Gilchrist@EC.GC.CA (with Cc to Gregg.Babish@EC.GC.CA).
