How To Apply
EligibilityThe Faculty of Graduate Studies sets the minimum requirements for admission to any graduate program at UBC. International students should also check their country's specific requirements (see the bottom of the page). 1. Apply OnlineComplete the online application. To be considered for the September 2012 entry, submit your completed application including all supporting documents, reference letters and official, endorsed transcripts, by the deadlines noted below. Note: the online 2012 application process will open on November 1st.
Early submissions are encouraged. If you are enrolled in a program and have not completed it by the time of your submission, we will still require a set of transcripts from your current institution by the January deadline as proof of enrollment. 2. Submit Supporting DocumentsAll supporting documents should be sent directly to the Department of Geography. Applicants may collect all transcripts and letters of reference and mail them as one package to the Department, provided that the envelopes are sealed and endorsed by the issuing institution or the referee. 1. Two sets of official transcriptsPlease arrange to have two official copies of your transcripts from all colleges and universities attended sent directly to the Department of Geography in envelopes which have been sealed and endorsed by the issuing institution. If you are still in your last year, please make sure to include your Term 1 (Fall Term) marks on your transcript. (This set of transcripts can be sent shortly after our deadline if necessary.) Detailed transcript requirements 2. Three letters of recommendationPlease arrange to have three letters of recommendations be sent directly to the Department of Geography. Referees are encouraged to complete the reference form. However, letters on referee's official letterhead are acceptable. As well, we accept electronic references through the online application system, in which case a paper version is not required. 3. Evidence of English language proficiencyApplicants from a university outside Canada in which English is not the primary language of instruction must present evidence of competency to pursue studies in the English language prior to being extended an offer of admission. Test scores must have been taken within the last 24 months at the time of submission of your application, and official test scores ordered from the testing agency is required for application. Permanent ResidentsPermanent Residents are required to provide proof of immigration status and date of landing by submitting a copy of the Record of Landing Form or a copy of both the front and back of their Permanent Resident card. 5. Additional InformationYou are welcome to submit additional information regarding professional employment experience, publications, or awards which you feel should be taken into account in considering your application. If you have been out of university for more than two years, this information is mandatory. You may submit a letter of intent (a one-page letter outlining your professional experience and research interests) and/or your resume/ c.v. Supporting Document Checklist
