Tuition

Effective January 1, 2008, incoming PhD students will no longer receive the Ph.D. Tuition Fee Award. However, all international Ph.D. students starting in/after January 2008 will receive the International Partial Tuition Scholarship; i.e. they will pay the same tuition as domestic students.

The PhD Tuition Fee Award is being phased out and will be replaced by the Graduate Support Initiative (GSI). The GSI funding will be available to students entering UBC in September 2008.

International M.A./ M.Sc. students pay the same low tuition fee as domestic students.

All international students are eligible for the International Partial Tuition Fee Scholarship for the entire period of their masters study, or for their fifth or later years of doctoral study.

Ph.D. Students

All students are considered full-time students and are assessed fees according to Schedule A.

M.A./ M.Sc. Students

All students are automatically assessed fees according to full-time study (Schedule A).

Part-time students

Students who wish to be classified as part-time must obtain approval from the graduate advisor and the Faculty of Graduate Studies prior to the beginning of the first term of the program (i.e., prior to the commencement of the degree program) in which fees are first assessed.

Once approved, students are not permitted to revert back to Schedule A after the initial payment.

Students classified as part-time are advised that:

• they are not eligible to receive interest-free status government loans, University fellowships or scholarships;
• they are not eligible for teaching assistantships, research assistantships, student housing, or assigned desk space at the University; and
• the five-year maximum time allowed for the masters program also applies to part-time students.
