Air Photo Collection and Services
The GIC is home to the University Aerial Photograph Collection which consists of approximately 366,000 air photos. This centre has the largest hard copy collection in British Columbia, since the closure of the Provincial Air Photo Warehouse in Victoria. To search and order digital copies of air photos please consult the Integrated Land Management Bureau - Crown Registry and Geographic Base Branch in Victoria.
The library holdings include federal, provincial and private air photos dating from 1922 to 2007 for many areas in B.C. and some areas of the Yukon. The air photos form a historical collection mainly covering urban areas, although most rural areas will have some coverage. To check what is available in the GIC, or to search for what air photos are available away from the urban areas, please consult the GIC staff.
The majority of the air photos available in the GIC are vertical black and white prints with some colour photos (post 1970) available for selected areas. Some oblique air photos are available for selected areas in B.C. during the mid 1940s (part of the TRIMET coverage of BC at that time).
The standard format for a vertical aerial photograph, contact print is 25cm x 25cm (10" x 10"). Each photo is cross referenced to an index map or flight report that indicates the exact flight path, flight altitude, date, and time of exposure. These air photographs are filed according to the air photo roll numbers and are located in the compact storage in the reference area.
