ENVIRONMENTALLY SIGNIFICANT AREAS IN RICHMOND

Protection of biodiversity is now widely recognized as critical to human survival.   Biodiversity protection is dependent upon protection of  habitats and ecosystems that support both species and communities of plants and animals.  In Richmond, biodiversity protection is also critical to the health of the Fraser delta and the globally significant wildlife systems that it supports.  Richmond's has identified Environmentally Significant Areas within municipal boundaries. These ESA's have been identified and mapped by the City, and the city has developed guidelines for managing development proposals in adjacent sites in order to minimize impact on key natural areas.

The City of Richmond has mapped the environmentally significant areas of the municipality as part of the Official Community Plan for the city.
