I grew up in a log house that my dad was continuously modifying and as a result building things from wood was common place. When my dad retired, he bought a lathe and has taken to wood turning in a serious way. Whenever I get the chance to go back to Nelson we have a great time making lamps and other items from wood. The lamps are most interesting to make--. the shades are turned from one solid block of wood while it is still wet and made thin enough that light is transmitted through them. When not in Nelson I get to enjoy their warm light at my desk.
The beginning of a lamp shade

This shade has had the inside turned and sanded and now the outside edge is being cut away. The light is used to assess how thick the wood is.

This lamp shade is nearly finished, just the top is left. This shade now sits in my office.
