Pahoehoe  lava flow. Pahoehoe is formed as a crust covers the underlying liquid lava and the movement of the continued lava flow below begins to wrinkle the surface creating a ropy texture. Pahoehoe in Hawaiian means "ropy."  This type of flow typically advance as a series of lobes and toes that continually break out from a cool crust (D.J. Kovanen)
