ABSTRACT

For my final project, I aim to upgrade my thesis to include a GIS analysis that provides a landscape-scale overview of forest composition and structure to explore the extent to which my sites represent the larger landscape (Figure 3). Chronologies of fire built using records from tree rings can be extrapolated out to the entire population only when sample sites represent the study area. To test for representativeness of my sample sites, I need to identify the physical attributes that influence vegetation within the landscape, test for differences between my sample population and the entire landscape, and ensure that my sample sites do not differ from the entire landscape. My project will build into the Study Area section of my thesis to meet the following objectives:

1. use a chi-squared test to assess independence between elevation and stand age,

2. build a logistic regression model to predict stand age based on physical attributes and distance from nearest road, and

3. situate sample sites within physical context of entire study area.     Figure 3
