About Me

UBC CampusI am an assistant professor in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia interested in why the climate matters.

I lead a broad program of research and teaching investigates how climate variability and climate change influences society and ecosystems like coral reefs. This work provides insight into the causes and effects of climate change, public perception of climate change, the efficacy of different policy options, and the feasibility of climate change adaptation.

Scientists like myself are fortunate to have the opportunity to engage our curiosity about the natural world for a living. With that opportunity, comes responsibility. As a member of the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program and a Google Science Communication Fellow, I am committed to bridging the gap between the academic world and the real world.

As a means of outreach to the public, the media and policymakers, I regularly participate in public events, maintain the blog Maribo, and work with students on short videos for the internet (prototype below!).
