UBC’s Department of Geography alumni have a longstanding history of individual achievements and collective success.

Since the first Department of Geography courses were offered at the University in 1921, our alumni have made a mark for themselves internationally and in a vast diversity of careers.

Dr. Tara Cookson receives Alumni Achievement Award
The Young Alumni Award recognises 'significant and inspiring leadership'; Dr. Cookson's research on gender equity has led to work with UN Women and the founding of feminist consultancy Ladysmith.

Alumnus John Thistle’s Scholarly Publishing Recognized
His first book, Resettling the Range: Animals, Ecologies, and Human Communities in Early British Columbia, has received multiple awards.

Sophie Webber, EGSG Dissertation Award Winner,
Congratulations to our recent graduate, Sophie Webber (PhD ’15), for winning the Best Dissertation award in Economic Geography from the Economic Geography Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers! Her winning dissertation was titled, “Adaptation Ecologies: Circuits of Climate Change Finance, Policy and Science in the Pacific Islands.”
