Professional Leadership Network

UBC Geography’s Professional Leadership Network (PLN) builds and supports an intellectual and professional community by connecting scholars with government, industry, and NGO representatives.

The PLN enhances alumni and community relations, provides relevant and integrated educational opportunities for graduate students, and establishes important research and community partnerships.  In sum, the Network:

  • Fosters two-way learning between leaders at different career stages
  • Establishes important ties between UBC researchers and the community in which they operate
  • Encourages connections and provides occasions for knowledge exchange across sectors

Funded by the University of British Columbia’s Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund, the PLN promotes and strengthens broader student learning and participation both within the University and across sectors.

Check out the following PLN Bulletins:

Each year the Network invites its membership and UBC Geography’s graduate students to an opening reception.  This reception kicks off the PLN’s annual events program and provides a wonderful opportunity for students and professionals to meet, learn from each other, and learn from our informative, keynote speaker.

The PLN offers annual teaching and learning programs that incorporate members into graduate educational experiences. Events include invites to the Geography Department Speaker Series, the Annual Graduate Symposium, and more! Please visit our Community Events calendar for more information.

The Mentorship Program is one element of the Professional Leadership Network’s efforts to create new kinds of learning opportunities and to help forge intellectual, professional and personal bonds between UBC and individuals in the workforce.

The PLN offers membership to individuals from industry, government and NGO representatives, along with mentors and mentee students.  Members’ ages, positions and backgrounds vary and recruitment is aimed at persons who are able to provide insight or advice relevant to graduate students’ interests and learning objectives.  There is no fee associated with membership, just an interest in giving back to the next generation of Geography graduates.
